One day, there was a wise teacher with his students walking home to their temple. On the way home, they met a woman who was falling down and could not stand up. They then immediately reached her to see her condition. One of her legs was injured and it was hard for her to walk home. The only way to help her was carrying her on the back. Fortunately, her home was not far from here. After thinking awhile, the teacher then brought her home by carrying her on his back.

On the journey, one of his students was so disappointed by his teacher’s action. He was frequently warned by the teacher that it was strictly prohibited to touch a woman. But that day, he had done that and broke his own rule.

Two days after that incident, the student still put a hard thought about that all the time and still did not find the answer why his teacher did that. Until one day, he decided to meet and asked his teacher. He asked, “Teacher, you always tell me before that we are not allowed to touch a woman. Why did you do that two days ago when you brought the woman to her home? I need your clear explanation.”

Then the teacher was thinking for a moment before giving his answer. Then he said, “Yes, it is not allowed to touch a woman. But if I did not help her, who else could give a help? And the most important thing is that I have no longer thought about it soon after she was home. However, you thought about it for days. You give a negative thinking about me. You think that I steal the opportunity to touch the woman. I admit that I touched her, but I thought nothing that day. And you thought negatively about my action.”

Then he apologized for his mistake of judging his teacher in a negative way.

Message for readers:

The conclusion of the story above is that negative thinking will give you nothing. There is no benefit you can attain by having this negative thinking. Often we always and many times fill our mind with something negative that can endanger us. If you always put effort on negative thinking, the negative things will come to you because you focus on them. It will make you worry and feel more negative feeling. The more you think in negative way, the more negative you will be.

One day, a king held a contest which the winner of it would receive the luxurious house as the grand prize. The conditions of the contest were quite difficult for everyone to attend. The first condition was that everyone who wanted to attend this contest must had a goat and the second and yet most difficult condition was that the goat must at least had as long horns as arm. This condition made all of the people who wanted to attend this contest feel skeptic. They wondered how and where they could find those goats. They believed that the horn of a goat was not that long.

But there was a man who determined not to waste that golden opportunity. He believed that there must be a way to find a goat that complied with the conditions of the contest. He kept on thinking and rolling his mind to find the way. After several days, he found a genius idea that he believed it could make him the winner of the contest.

The day of the contest came. However, nobody could find the goat. They said that it was impossible to find the goat that had horns that was as long as arm. But the man came to the contest with his goat and a baby. The goat he brought to the contest did not have long horns. The goat had normal horns length as well as other goats. All of the people began to laugh and tell him that he would not win the contest. Then the king asked the man why he brought that goat and why he believed that he could win the contest.

Then the man answered, “Looked at the goat’s horn and then compare it to the baby’s arm. The goat’s horn is longer that the baby’s arm. The king said before that the goat must have as long horns as arm. But you did not say exactly whose arm it was. It means that baby’s arm is OK. That’s all my explanation.” Then the king said, “Very good. That is wise and smart answer. You deserve to be the winner and win the house that I promised.”

Every person can interpret and see something from different point of view. Let’s take an example of a question: what do you do if you have tried many times but you still fail in achieving your goals? The answers of the question will vary depending on the person. One will probably said that he will keep on trying until he succeed, another probably said that he will give up, another probably said that he will asked someone who has been successful how to do that, another said that it is just wasting time to do something that is hard to achieve and many more. All of the answers are correct. Once again, it depends on how a person sees something that is happening and what action he is going to take towards it. If you ask 10 persons, 10 of them will give you 10 different answers, do 10 different actions and give 10 different interpretations. 10 persons behave differently and uniquely towards one same event.

Remember the story above, everyone assumed that there was no goat that had as long horns as arm. They all thought that the arm must be the arm of an adult. They didn’t change their point of view. Don’t be static about something that is happening to you. You can change where you want to view. There are many ways to see something that is happening. If you think that you always see something in a negative way, you can now easily change it and begin to see something in a positive way.

There were a group of birds playing in the field. Everyday, they were there to play and gather. Until one day, they saw an eagle soared and flew on the sky. Then the birds were so amazed with the eagle. They stood quietly like the statues watching the flying eagle. They wanted to be like the eagle too, to fly high on the sky. But they didn’t know how to do that. Day after day, they saw the eagle almost everyday flying above them. Because of their willingness to be able to fly, they agreed to take a journey to find and meet the eagle at one peak of mountain.

Then they did the journey to find the eagle to teach them how to fly on the sky. The journey took several days, and they kept on walking and climbing up to reach the peak where the eagle lived. And their hard effort gave them the result they expected. They could finally find and asked the eagle to teach them to fly. And the eagle was ready and agreed to train them. All of the birds were very happy because they would fly soon.

The training took several days. The eagle taught them whatever in order to be able to fly. After they were trained by the eagle, they could finally fly on the sky. They all were too happy. They would no longer walk, they could fly to any places they liked. They then thanked the eagle for teaching them flying. Then the eagle flew to go somewhere. However the birds went home by walking down the mountain happily. They didn’t use their flying ability.

Many people have learned and mastered self improvement or success tips and techniques. However they do not use their ability for their benefits. They let their ability or knowledge to be unused like the documents being filed in a strongbox, locked, and never be opened again. They are back to their old habits doing the same old things.   4. Using visualization. Visualize as if you have succeeded and see yourself doing the new habits.
  5. Never give up. Whatever happens, don’t you ever give up until your new habits become your part.

One day, a grand teacher wanted to make an experiment for his students. So he gathered all of the students in a class and began the experiment. Before starting, he prepared big stones, gravels, sand, bottles of water and a round glass aquarium so the students could see inside it.

After a moment, the teacher started the experiment. First of all, he put the big stones into the aquarium until it’s fully loaded. The students paid attention thoroughly.

Then the teacher asked his students, “Is the aquarium full now?” “Yes, Sir!” All of the students replied at a time simultaneously. “No. It hasn’t been full yet.” The teacher said. The students began to wonder.

Then the teacher put the gravels into the aquarium until it’s fully loaded. The gravels could pass the big stones because the hoard of big stones has made large gaps (holes) so that the gravels could fill the gaps and fulfilled the aquarium. The teacher then gave a question once again, “Is the aquarium now full?” The students began to understand and replied, “Not yet.” The teacher said, “You’re right.”

The teacher then took a sack of sand and poured it into the aquarium until it’s fully loaded. The gravels in the aquarium made small gaps (holes) so the sand could still pass them. Then he asked, “Has the aquarium been full or not?” And the students answered, “Yes, Sir.” “You’re all right.” He said.

And then the experiment was finished. The teacher gave another question to his students about what the experiment meant. “Do you all know what the experiment means or what hidden message of this experiment is?” he asked. One of the students raised his hand to give his opinion and said, “When we do our most important work, we can still do our small work later.” Then the teacher said, “Not wrong, but it’s incomplete. Anyone else?” The class was silent and no one answered for long time, then the teacher told all of his students the purpose of his experiment.

The teacher explained, “You all know and see that before the experiment begins, I prepare big stones, gravels, sand and then pour them into a aquarium one by one. Big stones in the experiment symbolize our most important and highest priority, gravels symbolize quite important priority and sand symbolizes our lowest priority. Or we can say that big stones are our first priority, gravels are our second priority and sand is our third priority and so on. From the experiment, I put the big stones first into the aquarium, then gravels and sand at last. In the real life, we must do our most important things or priority that can take us to success. After that, we can still doing our lower priority and enjoy doing other priorities like the gravels and sand that can still fill the aquarium. But what will happen if I put the sand first until the aquarium is full of it is that the stones and gravels can’t be poured anymore because there’s no space left in the aquarium. This is also the same as in the real life. If we often and like to spend most of our valuable time to do our lowest priority or unimportant things that give no benefits to us, we can no longer do our most important things. Often later we’re aware of and regret of what we’ve done, but it’s too late for us. Time will never turn back. So always remember my words, finish first the most important things that can make your life better and more successful and ignore all of the things that can’t bring you to success because if you’ve done your important things, you can still doing other things later day. I hope you all get valuable lesson from what I’ve shown you from the experiment. I also hope that you can change your life better by knowing what your most important priority is and doing it. Do you understand what I mean now?”

Suddenly one of the students raised his hand and asked the teacher, “What about bottles of water over there? What are they for?” The teacher said, “Oh, good question. I’ve forgot already.” He immediately poured the water into the aquarium. He added, “water symbolizes our break time. It means that no matter how busy we are, how much our work to do, or how important our priority is, we can still have little time to enjoy our favorite beverage and refresh our mind.” After a moment, the class was dismissed and the students got invaluable lesson from their teacher.

The difference between the successful and the unsuccessful people is that the successful always focus and spend most of their time for their important priority. They always do the things that can bring them into great success. They’ll do whatever it takes to reach that. They’re ready to sacrifice their time, money, thought and energy to focus on their priority. They sacrifice their pleasant time with their family, time with their friends, playing time or spare time. They’re willing to work harder and longer than average people do just because they know their priority. They believe that their important priority will take them to the good things they will receive in the future. They also delay doing unimportant things that can’t take them to their dreams.

The unsuccessful people like to spend their life to do the things that isn’t important for them. They aren’t able to differentiate whether what they do is important for them or not. They always do the things that average or unsuccessful people do so their life doesn’t change. And more grievously, they know what the important priority is, they know it will transform their life better, healthier and richer but they still doing the same thing most of people do, they still spend more time for unimportant things. You must know that if we prioritize important things toward success, sooner or later the success will come to us and at that time, we can still have time to do the things that most people do. But if you prioritize useless things, you won’t have enough time to do your important things. Remember, time never waits for you. You must chase the time and time will never turn back. So use the time wisely and spend your time and days with your best work. I think you agree with the proverb “TIME IS MONEY”. Always ask yourself what your priority is and whether what you’re doing now is important for you or not.

This article is the continuation of my previous article “The Power of Faith”. Affirmation is perhaps not a strange word to you. You must have known it well. Affirmation is the action of telling something or saying words to yourself. Sometimes people call it as incantation. Affirmation is one of the ways to increase and empower your faith. But many people have wrong perception about how to use this affirmation effectively. They think and assume that by just saying words repeatedly, it will have the effect. If you just say, “I’m successful, I’m successful, I’m successful, I’m successful, I’m successful…”, it will have no effect. It is just the same as you are reading.

One factor that enhances the success of affirmation is the inclusion of your emotion combining with the words / affirmation you use. When you repeat words combining with your full emotion, soon you will believe in what you are saying to yourself. The better way is when you repeat that words with your emotion while you make some movement. Please note that your emotion must be positive and constructive emotion, not negative one. You can practice and use affirmation while you are jogging in the park. Use one sentence or words that you think is the best and fit for you. The following is some example of affirmation and you can make your own too.

  1. I’m stronger and more successful every day.
  2. I’m rich, successful and happy.
  3. There is no failure, only success or result.
  4. Other people can, and I can, too.
  5. I will achieve success.
  6. I have achieved…….. (Your goal) and many more.

One of athletes that use affirmation is Tiger Woods. His room is full of writings, pictures and golf records from the former golfer. Before sleeping and after waking up in the morning, he does the affirmation by saying, “I break your record!” repeatedly and emotionally. Every time he breaks the record, the writing or picture of the record is scored out. Now almost all of the records have been scored out.

Another example is Muhammad Ali. Before boxing, he repeatedly said the words emotionally “I KO him in round 3!” and even when boxing, he said, “I KO you in round 3! Often, his opponent was really KO in round 3 or even before round 3.

I ever attend a very powerful seminar about personal development in Indonesia where there was an amazing section about affirmation or auto-suggestion. In that section, the light was all turned off. All of the participants must shouted “I’m surely successful” loudly yet repeatedly with full power and emotion. With the background song “The Final Countdown”, I and other participants began the affirmation. Most of us shouted until we cried. But from that moment, my faith was significantly stronger and believed that what I shouted would come true. I lost my voice for several days due to too much shouting. But this was incredible experience for me. Unfortunately, the participant can only attend this seminar once in a lifetime. There is no second chance to attend it more.

Tips: now, what is your affirmation? Write down your favorite affirmation or affirmation that work best for you, and practice and say it with full emotion combining with movement.

One day, there were a group of grasshoppers playing in the field. They were playing happily, jumping from one place to another place. But, suddenly, almost half of them trapped and fell into a quite deep hole and there was polluted water in there. They did not notice the hole because it was closed and covered by grass, so the hole became invisible.

They were in panic and tried and put much effort to escape from the hole. Unfortunately, none of them could get out of the hole, because it was quite deep and high for them. Many of them were too tired to try to get out of it, they finally drowned and died due to the pollutant and poisonous water. One by one of them surrendered and soon died. Their friends above the hole could not do anything to help them. They shouted and told them not to try anymore because it was useless and impossible to escape. They said, “Hi, friends, we are not able to help you all. So it’s better to give up. The hole is too high for you to climb up and get out of there. Don’t do anything useless, it’s better to save your energy and Rest In Peace (R.I.P). Just look at your friend, many of them has gone. We are so sorry for not helping you.”

There was a grasshopper that did not care for what its friends had said before. It kept on trying, climbing and jumping just to reach the edge of the hole to escape. No matter what they said, it did not want to listen to them, no matter how tired it was, no matter how impossible it was to get out of the hole, he jumped and climbed up. Its friends shouted again, “It will be in vain to get out of here. Why you insist on trying to do something that is impossible? Look at your friends now. They have all died, there’s only you alone in the hole. Enough. Don’t do that again. Goodbye friend.”

But, once again the only-one-in-the-hole grasshopper jumped, jumped, jumped and jumped as if it had unlimited power. As its friends kept on telling it to give up, it kept on jumping. And suddenly, the good luck came to it. It finally could reached the edge of the hole and slowly crawled and escaped out. Yes, the grasshopper was safe. Its friends ran and came to it quickly. They admire and amazed at its effort to escape. They asked, “Hi, friend, how can you get out of this deep hole. It is wonderful because all of your friends do not succeed like you do. What makes you keep on trying?” And many more questions are thrown to the grasshopper. But it only said, “What?” They asked one more time, “How can you survive and escape from the hole?” And once again, it said, “What?” They asked again and the answer was the same, “What?” No matter how many times they asked the question to the grasshopper, it would finally give the same words, “What?” But then, it said, “I’m sorry. I’m deaf. I cannot hear what you are telling me.”

Message for readers:

How often do you hear people give negative words or opinions to you? They often said:

  1. “Just bury your dreams deep down. It’s impossible.”
  2. “You want to achieve success…Don’t make me laugh.”
  3. “You didn’t get enough formal education. How can you be successful today?”
  4. “Don’t do that. Many people has failed. Don’t waste your time.”
  5. “If you are successful, perhaps the earth will slip and fall down.”
  6. “Look at your family. They are poor. How can you be?”
  7. “You want to be rich…Look at yourself in front of a mirror and introspect yourself.”
  8. “I’m better than you and I cannot do that, I think you will be worse.” Etc.

Those negative opinions and words sometimes can make you feel down and justify that what they have said is true. And if you finally accept and agree with what they told you, you will be weak, you will lose your power and spirit of success. Every day you will hear the negative things. It really can’t be prevented. Why you must sacrifice your dreams and visions by listening and agree with the negative words from other people. Don’t hear anything that can make you feel negatively. Let them pass by out of your mind like a bullet. Are you heart-broken, sad, hopeless, and feel down by them telling you that it’s impossible for you to be a successful person. Are you listening and make it true? Do you feel that what they are saying is true? Do you destroy your dreams just because of these negative words? Is your life is determined by them? Do they rule your life by telling you what is right and what is wrong? It isn’t wise thing to do, is it? Nobody can judge you for anything except you do. You decide what is the best for you. Nobody can make you feel down and hopeless except you. You must judge yourself to be successful. Just listen to positive things that can make you motivated to achieve your goals and dreams. Don’t ever listen to negative and destructive things. If you listen to that, it will sooner or later affect you.

There are many people forget their dreams just because they are affected by the negative things. At the beginning, they are so motivated and have powerful determination to achieve what they want. They are then low because the negative things make them hesitate and wonder if they can be what they dream of. And finally the negative things will be stronger and convince them that it’s impossible to achieve their dreams.

It’s your choice. You want to be the grasshoppers died in the hole or you want to be the deaf grasshopper that can finally survive and succeed. Once again, you choose, you are the judge, not others. Napoleon Hill said,"Who said it could not be done? And tell me what great victories does he have to his credit which qualifies him to judge what can and can't be accomplished." Who are they telling you that it is possible and impossible? Nothing is impossible. You have the right and it's possible to achieve your success.

There was a wise old man who could solve every person’s problem. No matter what their problems were, the man could give helpful yet powerful answers, suggestions, advice or wisdoms. And people were very satisfied by his way to solve it. Soon, the man became very famous due to his ability to solve problems. And one day there is a boy who had heard about him came to visit and expected to get some advice from him.

And after the boy met the wise man and having a little slight conversation, the boy gave a question to him, “I heard from many people that you can help everyone to get out of their trouble, and I want to ask for your advice or suggestion to my question I’m about to ask you.” And the man said, “Please!” And soon he asked, “My question is quite simple, I want to be a successful person, but sometimes I’m in powerful state and be positive, and in the other side, I sometimes think and believe that I cannot achieve my success. Can you give some advice for me how to overcome that?”

After listening to the boy’s question, the wise man stopped for some moments to think and absorb what the boy had just said. And then the man began to talk. He said, “Let me give you an illustration. There are always two types of snakes within you and all people. The first type is the non-poisonous and kind snake. It is not dangerous. And the second type is very wild and poisonous snake. It is very dangerous. If we do not feed the first snake, the non-poisonous snake, it will not strike or attack us because it is not dangerous. However if we do not or forget to feed the wild snake, it will attack you. And of course, it is dangerous for you because it is poisonous. The only way to prevent it attacking you is to feed him whenever it is hungry. The non-poisonous snake won’t attack you while it is hungry, so it will be sick and then die if it does not eat for long.” After listening the man’s illustration, he asked again, “So, if the both snakes fight and attack each other, who will be the winner?” The wise man answered, “Yes. Very good question. The snake who will be the winner is the snake we always feed. And do you know what the snakes within you are? They are your thought, and what you are thinking about will be your snake.” And then the wise man closed the conversation.

Message for readers:

Yes, what the wise man said on the story above is correct. Your thought can be illustrated by two types of snakes. Your positive thought is your non-poisonous kind snake and your negative thought is your poisonous snake. Let me ask you a question. Do you always think about positive things or do you always think frequently about negative things. There are so many people think about negative things in their life. They do not know the danger of thinking negative. If you frequently think in negative ways or think about what you do not want: poverty, sadness, pain etc, it means that you have awaken the dangerous snake within you. This snake (negative thinking) will always attack you and hinder your ways to success you dream of if you do not give it enough food. And the food is your positive thinking. If you give food (positive thinking) to the snake (negative thinking), it will not harm you. But what happen if you never or seldom think positive or think what you want: success, fame, wealth, health, happiness etc? The snake will be sick and die. It means that your power of positive thinking will be weaker and weaker and then disappear and finally your mind will be ruled by negative thinking.

The positive thinking can also be illustrated by a beautiful garden. If you always treat it properly and plant beautiful plants or flowers, it will be a very beautiful and good-looking garden. If you leave it and don’t manage it, the grass or other intruder plants will grow up and make your garden become bad-looking. So many people are confined and ruled by their own negative thinking. It is very dangerous because it will spread the negative virus within you. And your success is so far from your reach. What you think, act, feel or talk, you will do that in a negative ways. Your thought is very valuable. Don’t leave it unemployed. There are no successful persons that always think in negative ways. And the fact is that the positive thinking is hundreds of times more powerful and stronger than the negative thought. What you are today is the results of what you have thought in the past. If you want success, think about success in a positive way. If you want something negative come to you, think about it. All depend on your thought and what you frequently think about.

Tips: For the next days, let yourself think positively. Think about something you want. Example: success, wealth, health, good relationship, happiness or else. Always give your mind with the positive thinking. Don’t give attention or think about what you do not want. Example: I don’t want live in poverty, I don’t want to be sick, sad or else. You see they contain negative words that can endanger you.

Every time you think about negative things, change it into positive way. Example: if you think about not having much money, change it by thinking about having a lot of money. It makes you feel better and more positive, isn’t it?
